Items:
All these sun photometers measure aerosol optical thickness at green and red wavelengths, as described in the GLOBE Aerosol Protocol. Assembled instruments have been aligned and calibrated by the Science Team.
| Item | Price | How many? | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Item 1. Basic two-channel sun photometer | $75 | ||||
| This instrument requires an external voltmeter, which connects to the instrument through standard pin jacks on the side of the case. | |||||
| Item 2. Kelvin 50LE digital voltmetermeter | $10 | ||||
| This is an inexpensive general-purpose digital multimeter that, despite its low price,
appears suitable for use with the basic two-channel sun photometer. You can also order this
voltmeter directly (see www.kelvin.com | |||||
| Item 3. Kit of parts for basic two-channel sun photometer | $35 | ||||
| When assembled, this instrument is equivalent to the basic two-channel sun photometer (item 1). It must be returned to the Science Team for calibration before it can be used to enter aerosol data into the GLOBE database. (There is no charge for calibration.) A voltmeter is not included. Construction details are available on the Web at www.mcs.drexel.edu/~dbrooks/globe/construction/construction_V3.htm. | |||||
| Item 4. Sun photometer with built-in digital panel meter | $110 | ||||
| This calibrated instrument has two sunlight apertures rather than one, but is otherwise
equivalent to item 1, with the addition of: a. a built-in digital panel meter (does not require an external voltmeter), b. a 3.5mm output jack for external monitoring of the instrument output, c. a standard db25 plug, not wired. In principle, this instrument can be retrofitted in the future for automated datalogging through the db25 plug. However, if you have any interest whatsoever in automated datalogging, you should purchase item 5. | |||||
| Item 5. Sun photometer with built-in digital panel meter and temperature sensor | $135 | ||||
| This calibrated instrument has two sunlight apertures rather than one, but is otherwise
equivalent to item 1, with the addition of: a. a built-in digital panel meter (does not require an external voltmeter), b. a built-in sensor that monitors air temperature near the LED detectors, c. a rotary channel-select switch for monitoring the green or red channel, or the temperature, d. a 3.5mm output jack for external monitoring of the instrument output, e. a standard db25 plug for connection to a B&B Electronics 232SDA12 computer interface. This instrument is designed for use with a computer interface to record both channels plus temperature simultaneously, but it can also be used to collect data manually, as described in the GLOBE Aerosol Protocol. The db25 plug is wired specifically for use with the computer interface described in item 6. | |||||
| Item 6. B&B Electronics 232SDA12 12-bit Data Acquisition Module | $60 | ||||
| See www.bb-elec.com | |||||
| Item 7. B&B Electronics UC232A (or equivalent) USB-to-serial adapter | $40 | ||||
| This device allows you to use the B&B 232SDA12 Data Acquisition Module with Windows-based computers (Windows 98 or later operating system) that have a USB port, but no serial port. (Newer laptop computers often fall in this category.) Equivalent devices are also available from other sources, such as TigerDirect (www.tigerdirect.com). | |||||
| Item 8. 2-meter db25-male to db9-female cable | $15 | ||||
| This cable is used to connect item 5 to your computer's serial port. It is a standard cable that is widely available at electronics and computer stores. | |||||
