Thankfully nothing really TOO BAD happened on Halloween, although the internet was full of rumors and threats about what could happen. Many public events were canceled including "Mall-o-ween" events at many shopping malls around the country.
You may have seen the email about the girl who got a warning from her middle eastern boyfriend who begged her to stay home on September 11, and not to go to the mall on Halloween. You may also have read an email or seen a web page saying that the email is a HOAX. I am sure that poor girl Laura Katsis regrets forwarding the email with her real name attached, because now she is getting crank calls and is being hounded by the tabloids and news media.
But just because in retrospect "nothing bad happened" on Halloween, that does NOT mean that a "credible threat" did NOT exist. If our country had not been on a high state of alert, and if many malls and other public places had not canceled plans for large public events, who is to say what might have happened.
And I admit, it was difficult for ME not to get up in the Internet rumor frenzy!
P.S. Solar flares and geomagnetic storms continued
all during Halloween week resulting in some amazing
aurora photos from around the world, including mid northern latitudes
in the USA, and as far south as California!
Two years in a row, a comet named "LINEAR" had
a brief unexpected brightening as it got close to the sun, and then broke
into pieces as its nucleus disintegrated. In May 2001, Comet LINEAR
C2001/A2 split into three parts just before reaching perihelion.
A year earlier, Comet LINEAR C1999/S4 was imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope.

A third Comet LINEAR (WM1) is heading towards perihelion in December 2001, and may brighten to naked eye visibility. Will the third time be a charm?? Will Comet LINEAR WM1 become the Christmas Comet of 2001?
On November 19, as many people are viewing the
Leonid Meteors, the Comet LINEAR WM1 will pass near the bright variable
star Algol in the constellation Perseus. The two brightest comets
of the previous decade, Hyakutake
and Hale-Bopp, also passed through Perseus as seen from earth,
and their paths crossed near the star Algol exactly one year apart in 1996
and 1997.

Last year at this time the sun ws also unusually
active. Remember one year ago when the biggest topic being discussed
in the media were hanging chads and dimpled chads? I remain convinced
that the extra protons from space helped to create, prolong, and deepen
the MASS INSANITY that affected our country in the month of November 2000!
