The Diana Mystique

I was only 3 1/2 yrs old when Kennedy as shot, so I remember it
vaguely- I remember the grief we felt in the US (my mother,
naturally, and people in Cambridge, Kennedy's home Congressional
& Senatorial districts) was far greater than I am seeing now,
even with all the candles and stuff, although I suppose in Britain
their feelings are closer to what was felt here in 1963.

But the world was less jaded then- it was a shock for the first American
president fully in the television age to be gunned down on television-
by now, we are almost desensitized to violence.

Our daughter Elisabeth was born June 22 1995, one day after
William's 13th birthday, so that is another odd link between US
(Why us? Why do we *ALL* feel that Diana was "one of us"??)
and the Spencers/Windsors. She is just a little over 2 years old now-
I want to take her to the British Embassy so that she may also have
some vague memories about a special day when some famous person died-
although she is too young to understand, maybe having pictures of the
event and talking about it will allow her to remember it years from now.

One of Us

Diana was more than a member of the royal family- part of her mystique is that she was "one of us," sharing the same birthday (July 1 1961) as my friend John, and my daughter sharing her son's birthday. She is of our generation, the generation that turns 40 at the turn of the Millennium, the downward side of the "baby boom." While the official baby boom refers to people born from 1948 (Prince Charles) through the 1960's , I feel there is something special about those of us born in 1960-61, the first children to spend our childhoods fully in the television age. Naturally *I* feel this way- because I am a part of this generation. So of course *I* put special significance on turning 40 in the year 2000: 40 is the pivotal age of a person's life. So I am told by all the psychologists and authors who say so, as well as the Biblical scholars who tell us the significance of 40 years in the Bible. With all this prognostication around birthdays, I never saw this coming. All the astrologers charts showed Diana's chart and influence remaining STRONG through the millennium, as is William's chart (the most amazing and powerful planetary chart of ANYONE this century) while Charles has the most wishy washy horoscope ever cast. Many people feel that DIANA in DEATH is still MORE of an INFLUENCE on William and the monarchy of England than CHARLES is while ALIVE!

Immortal

In death, Diana reaches immortal status, the stuff of legend, and will now appear on the same list as many of the other legendary figures of the century who died before their time- JFK, John Lennon, Princess Grace of Monaco, Marilyn Monroe, et al. Elton John will sing a rewritten version of "Candle in the Wind" at the funeral, forever linking Diana and Marilyn. Full Lyrics We will never have to see her get old, get wrinkles, or go through more scandals- in retrospect her life will be analyzed, and she will be seen to be ALMOST "saint-like" (which is ridiculous- but it is happening already) - she was an "average" (not a peasant, or a commoner, but the daughter of the Viscount of Althorp let us not forget) girl who innocently entered the twisted world of the Windsors and was destroyed by them - and this reflection will be brought to bear on the British Royals.
