Grunewald's Isenheim Alterpiece
I finally found a good online rendition of the alterpiece which
I learned about in Art History class in college.
This is the location:
http://sunsite.unc.edu/cjackson/grunewal/p-grunewa8.htm
This aspects of this painting which have relevance to the Eagle Nebula are:
The orientatation of the legs as Jesus "floats up"
The "Halo" of light from behind Jesus's head
You will have to ignore the orientation of the hands, or the fact
that this Jesus is a blond Nordic looking guy. Grunewald was Dutch,
I believe.
Too see the detail around the face of the painting, you will need
to see the full size image.
Does this HELP anyone see the "legs" in the Eagle Nebula picture?
Once you are able to visualize legs hanging below robes
wrapped in the cloud, you can then construct Jesus from "head to toe"
NEXT TOPIC: In this week's (May 9-15, 1998) TV Guide magazine,
there is a cardboard pullout advertisement for a statute from the
Franklin Mint. It is a statue of Jesus "Ascending to Heaven in a Cloud."
Has anyone seen it? If so, you will also see a similarity to the
Eagle Nebula image. That will be our next topic.
