Tips Microsoft won't tell you unless you pay $35

Defragment your hard drive at least every two weeks.
Pay no attention to the message that says you do not need to defragment this drive. You have to be pretty patient either way.
If you have a 1GB hard drive and it is 5% fragmented,
you will have to wait 45 minutes to defragment it.
A fragmented hard drive slows down your computer's access speed.

If your hard drive is 1GB or larger and you are using Windows 95 without partitions,
chances are you have wasted space. The cluster size is too big
for anything smaller than 16k.

Solutions:

format hard drive
partition hard drive
get new OS

maintainence list:

run scandisk
empty recycle bin
empty cache to internet browser
