Local Shops

Tibet’s local handicrafts are available in most large markets, but if you really want to go souvenir-hunting, perhaps the best place to go is Lhasa’s famous Bakhor market- it’s ages old, great for wandering around and getting a taste of Tibet, and a good place to pick up local crafts. Lhasa is, anyway, the best place to shop in Tibet- not just for handicrafts, but for virtually anything you need. Larger shops stock most things you’re likely to need, and provided you’re not fussy about brands, you shouldn’t have much difficulty finding things.

Credit cards have very low acceptance in Tibet- so carry local cash whenever you step out to buy anything. Bargaining, as in much of Asia, is not just acceptable, but even expected; so don’t hesitate to haggle if you think the price is too high.
