You can call me Professor Long. I don't have a PhD, so there's no need to call me Dr. Long.
Instructors have no influence over enrollment or class sizes. We can't move people off the waitlist or increase the number of students allowed in a section. You'll need to reach out to your adviser to see what your options are.
Instructors have no influence over whether a prerequisite requirement will be waived. You'll need to reach out to your adviser to see what your options are.
Some teaching professors also do research on the side, but I'm not one of them. I'm happy to point you to my colleagues who are looking for student researchers, though.
If you've taken a class or otherwise worked with me, you can ask me to serve as a reference on your TA application. Before I agree, I may ask to have a short meeting with you to discuss the position and why you want to be a TA. Make sure to ask me if I'll serve as a reference before you put my name down on the TA application.
If you've taken a class or otherwise worked with me, you can ask me for a recommendation. You may want to remind me how we know each other, particularly if it's been awhile since we've worked together. If you're not sure if I'll agree to write you a recommendation, it never hurts to ask.
Depending on the application, I may ask you to fill out a short form telling me what you're applying for, how you know me, and why you're a good fit for the position. I may then ask to meet with you so we can discuss your application in more detail. The better I know you, the stronger I can make my recommendation.
Make sure to ask me if I'll recommend you before you put my name down on an application. It's best to ask a month before it'll be due. This is so I can make sure I have enough time to write a strong letter and decline if I don't. A month also gives you enough time to find another person if I decline.
